Södra Malmö, Naturreservat

Handlinger
Beskrivelse
This large archipelago area takes several days to discover. There are open meadows and pastures as well as pine-covered rocky areas. The varied nature is home to a rich plant and animal life, both on land and in the water.
Old forest
Hillside pine forests with lingonberries and blueberries characterize most of the nature reserve's islands. Fallen tree trunks and dry trees testify to the fact that the forest has had to look after itself for a long time. Here you can walk among trees that are up to 200 years old! The oldest forest in the reserve - a primeval forest-like environment with lots of coarse pine and decaying wood - can be found southeast of Frisksjön in Södra Malmö. There are also many old, large oaks scattered throughout the reserve.
Living grazing tradition
Almost all the islands were used as pastures in the past. Today, grazing animals are an unusual sight in the archipelago. But on Södra Malmö the grazing tradition lives on. You can still see cows here, both in the forest and in the open pastures. In the grazed forest there are plenty of clearings and the sunlight reaches the ground. If grazing ceases, the forest will become denser and grasses and herbs that thrive in light-open environments will disappear.
Fish and birds
The reserve contains many valuable marine environments. For example, the sheltered, shallow bays are ideal for perch and pike to spawn. They also serve as nurseries for small fish. The abundance of fish and underwater plants attracts many birds, which can feed in the calm bays.
