Slagdala, Naturreservat

Handlinger
Beskrivelse
The nature reserve protects part of Virserumsåsen. On top of the ridge grows sparse coniferous forest and below it is open, sandy land. The sandy environments are very valuable for a wide range of flowers and insects.
Hot spot for sand species
Slagdala has been identified as one of Sweden's most species-rich environments for the group of gall wasps (bees, bumblebees and others). The richness of the species is in some ways due to humans. Farmers' cattle have grazed at Slagdala for generations. The grazing, but also the extraction of sand and gravel in gravel pits, has created perfect environments with exposed, sun-warmed sand for, for example, sand-living wild bees to dig out their nests in.
Valuable sandy environments
In the past, there were plenty of open sandy environments such as airfields and sandy ravines in Sweden. Today they are in short supply, which is a threat to sand-dwelling plants and animals. But in Slagdala they have a sanctuary. To keep it that way, measures must be taken in the reserve in the future. Therefore, more areas will be grazed, the forest will be thinned out and new sand flats will be created.
Remains from the Ice Age
Virserumsåsen stretches through the whole of Kalmar County in a south-east-north-west direction. It is 56 meters high and is considered one of southern Sweden's most powerful river formations. Here in Slagdala the ridge is 40 meters high. The ridge was created when the ice sheet melted around 10,000 years ago.
