Beskrivelse

In Skogsby lund you can stroll between old, wide-crowned oaks and large hazel bushes. If you are here in the spring or early summer, the grove offers an impressive display of flowers. Like many other groves on the island, Skogsby lund has a past as a meadow.

Lovely greenery

Walking in an island grove in spring is a wonderful experience. The sun's rays shine through the freshly cut foliage and the ground is dotted with wood anemones. In May, the flora of the grove is at its peak, with toothwort, ferns and lungwort in bloom. After that

the crowns of the deciduous trees block out the sun's rays and the grove becomes a shimmering green

leafy hall.

Trees that tell a story

Until the early 1900s, local farmers harvested hay in this area. The grove's old, coarse oaks tell us that everything looked different once

in the past. They grew up in the open meadows and therefore have large, wide crowns. If you see a gnarled ash tree with branches coming from the same place on the trunk, it has been pollarded. Through pollarding, farmers would collect branches and leaves to feed their livestock during the winter.

A green room

Today, a lush grove of various deciduous trees grows in the old meadow. The most common are oak and hazel, but there are also plenty of elm, ash, apple, birch and maple. Under the tree crowns there are large hazel bushes together with other flowering shrubs such as olive and hawthorn.

The flora of Lunden

In spring and early summer, when the sun's rays still reach the ground through the trees' delicate foliage, Skogsby lund is in bloom. The bluebells are the first to bloom. They appear early among the leaves of last year. A little later, carpets of white anemones spread out. In the summer, the grove closes in and the flowers become sparse. Bumblebees, wood violets and meadowsweet are among the plants that can live in the shade under the dense foliage of the trees.
