Sandbäckshult nature reserve consists of a stretch of the Alsterån river with surrounding wetlands and continuous deciduous forests with old trees. There are riparian forests, swamp forests, but also forests on drier ground and remains of old pastures with large oaks. The species diversity is high throughout the area, with many red-listed species.
Alsterån - wild and friendly
The Alsterån river is rich in boulders here, with very large boulders in places, mixed with stone and gravel bottoms. The river is divided into several small streams and riffles with lots of both large and small islands. The river sometimes flows with wild rapids and sometimes calmer in a flatter landscape where valuable species-rich wetlands spread out.
Water full of life
The stretch of river is fairly untouched here, without the impact of historical gutting. This results in varying water levels and relatively natural water dynamics, where flooding is allowed to affect the surrounding land. This is enjoyed by species such as the hairy clawed mussel, the common mussel and the brown trout, all of which thrive in Sandbäckshult.
Unusual species in the forest
The forests around the river are also home to a number of unusual beetles that like dead wood and fungi that need old trees to thrive. Examples of insects include the red-necked black beetle, linden leaf beetle and giant fungus moth, and the small bat barbastelle has been found in the damp woodlands around the river.
There are good opportunities for outdoor recreation, especially south of the river, with several facilities that the municipality is responsible for. The Mönsteråsleden trail runs through the reserve and at Näset there is a barbecue area and shelter managed by Blomstermåla Fiske & Fritid.

Sandbäckshult Nature Reserve is located just south of Sandbäckshult community, west of Blomstermåla in Mönsterås municipality.
Regler
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Camp for more than one day in the same place.
- Cycle on places other than roads and designated trails.
- Harm or disturb mammals and birds. Do not climb trees or mountains. Do not go near birds of prey nests, roosts and burrows.
- Make fires unless you have your own barbecue or outdoor kitchen.
- Break twigs and branches of living and dead trees and bushes.
- Take off and land aircraft such as drones.
You need permission from the County Administrative Board to do this:
- Pick mosses, lichens and fungi growing on trees unless you are just taking a small piece for species identification.
- Dig up or pull up plants by the roots.
- Collect insects and other small animals with traps that kill the animals.
- Organize competitions and other similar activities.

Full regulations
C. Regulations pursuant to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code.
It is forbidden to enter the reserve:
- Camping for more than one day in the same place.
- Ride a bicycle other than on the road and designated trail.
- Harm or deliberately disturb mammals and birds, climb trees or stay near a bird of prey's nest, lair or pot.
- make a fire other than in a barbecue or outdoor kitchen or in specially designated places
- break branches, cut down or damage living or dead trees or bushes
- take off and land with aircraft, such as drones
It is forbidden to do so without the permission of the County Administrative Board:
7. pick mosses, lichens or wood-living fungi, except for single specimens for species identification
8. Digging or pulling up vascular plants.
9. Collecting insects or other invertebrates with traps that kill.
10. Conducting a competition, event or similar organized activity
11. Placing a sign, board, poster, art object, orienteering control, cordon, marker or similar.
Regulations C 3 and C 4 do not apply to hunting license holders when hunting.
Regulations C 10 and C 11 do not apply to temporary activities on a small scale (e.g. training and competitions) or to childcare and school activities. Signs, displays or similar devices must be maintained and removed

Regulation C 11 does not apply to the marking of the Mönsterås Trail.
Regulation C 11 does not apply to fishing right holders, hunting right holders or animal keepers.
