Beskrivelse

Some of Sweden's most endangered animal and plant species live in the Sällevadsån valley. The unique natural environment offers magical forests, rushing water and rarities such as the river pearl mussel.

Sällevadsån

Sällevadsån is part of the Emån water system and forms the border between Kalmar and Jönköping counties. The river is a shallow, flowing watercourse; a valuable aquatic environment. The rapid water flow means that there is open water all year round, something that, for example, the common tern uses when it seeks food in winter. Many species of fish and birds depend on the flowing water. For example, trout, kingfishers and otters live along and in the unique stretches of flowing water.

River pearl mussel

The river is home to one of the richest populations of the rare river pearl mussel in northern Europe. The river pearl mussel has declined in Sweden due to past pearl fishing, pollution, acidification and changes in the character of the waterways. Parts of the river have been float-cleaned, a measure that involves removing stones and straightening the river's course to make it easier to transport timber. Today, a great deal of work has been done to restore the original environment of the river.

Enchanted forest

Coniferous and deciduous forest surrounds Sällevadsån. In the magical forest there are plenty of old rough trees. They are important habitats for mosses, lichens and fungi. Dead trees are also valuable, as the dead wood is used by a large number of organisms. The trees that line the river are important for fish life. Fallen trunks and branches become hiding places. Bugs that feed on old leaves that have fallen to the bottom become fish food.
