Djurstad- och Petgärdeträsk is a wetland paradise for birds. Snipe, water rail, marsh harrier and many other bird species nest here. In the wetlands there is plenty of food for all the young birds. The area is also visited by migratory birds, which take a break to eat and rest.
Djurstad- and Petgärdeträsk is part of a cultural landscape, characterized by centuries of grazing and haymaking. During the 20th century, the wetlands were drained to create more land for cultivation. When the annual floods failed to materialize, the land began to overgrow, causing many birds to stop coming here. For some years now, restoration work has been underway in the reserves. For example, haymaking and grazing have been reintroduced in some areas, resulting in the return of many ducks and waders as breeding birds.
Among all the bird sounds you can hear from the wetlands, there are a few that stand out. When the common snipe dives from a high altitude, it picks up so much speed that its outer tail feathers start to vibrate. This produces a humming sound, reminiscent of a goat bleating. A fierce grunt from the reeds reveals that the grebe is not far away, and what appears to be a squealing pig is in fact a water rail. The Small-spotted Crake is another species that is difficult to see but easier to hear. It announces its presence with a loud 'huitt huitt', mainly at night.
