Örarevet, Naturreservat
- Naturreservat
- Landsdel: Kalmar län och Öland
Handlinger
Beskrivelse
The nature reserve includes Örarevet, a two-kilometer-long pebble ridge, plus an archipelago with some thirty low islets and skerries. The ridge is a popular hiking and excursion area with extensive coastal meadows, peculiar juniper heaths and barren shingle beaches. In the northern part there is a municipal bathing area with an inviting sandy beach.
Herb-rich pastures
For several hundred years, the farmers in the area have grazed their animals on Örarevet and adjacent islets and skerries in the summer. Grazing has kept the land open and contributed to a rich flora. Cat's-foot, yellow moon, gray mallow, clover and coastal arum are some species to look out for in the nature reserve's juniper-clad pastures.
Remains from war, fishing and shipping
On the eastern side of Örarevet you can see the traces of four forts. The defense facilities were built during the Scanian War of 1676-1677 to protect the coast against the Danes and Dutch. The labyrinths on the southern part of the reef are of a more recent date. Similar labyrinths are common along the coast and are often laid out by fishermen and sailors.
Birds of the nature reserve
The nature reserve is known for its rich bird life. Low skerries, well-grazed coastal meadows and shrub-rich pastures offer the birds many valuable nesting environments. Some 40 bird species are more or less resident. Among the more unusual species are the little tern and the common tern. The most famous bird in the reserve is probably the middle cormorant, or 'eel crow' as it is also known.
Visitor information and hiking trail
There are four picnic and barbecue areas on the reef. From the parking lot, a trail runs along the entire reef. From the 2023 season, firewood will no longer be available at the barbecue areas. You must bring your own firewood. **Remember that you are not allowed to take branches from the reserve and burn them.
The first part of the trail, up to the first barbecue area, is adapted for accessibility with stone flour gravel. The barbecue area is also adapted with a flat surface and extra space around the barbecue and at the table.
Toilets are available in summer at the bathing area in the north.
