Beskrivelse
Norra Tjust archipelago is a large nature reserve with over 200 islands, islets and skerries. Here, nature varies from forested, lush islands in the west to the cold, washed-out islands of the outer sea band. The archipelago invites you to go boating, canoeing, fishing and swimming.
Archipelago history
For a long time there was a resident population in the Norra Tjust archipelago. The fishing villages of Grindö, Städsholmen and Jutö were probably established in the Middle Ages. Livestock farming was an important complement to fishing and animal grazing has characterized the nature on many of the islands.
Birds high and low
The archipelago's varied environments, from woodland to rocky outcrops, sheltered bays and shallow straits, create good conditions for a rich bird life. Eiders, grebes and oystercatchers nest on small islands and skerries. Loud cries can be heard from Städsholmen. The reserve's largest colony of herring gulls, black-legged kittiwakes and sandwich terns make themselves known. Ducks and grebes take advantage of the vigilant gulls and are happy to nest in the colony. The mighty white-tailed eagle glides between the islands on its broad wings. Lesser spotted woodpeckers, stone curlews and avocets are other birds you may see on the islands.
The colorful archipelago
In the crevices of the rocky areas it is dry, there is not much soil to speak of and the wind is blowing. In other words, harsh conditions. But that doesn't stop lovewort, cowslip, yellow buttercup, trift and tarflower, which add color to the archipelago islets. Lovewort is the staple food of the Apollo butterfly larva. If you visit the reserve in summer, you might see this largest butterfly in Europe!
Visitor information
The area is well visited by pleasure boats during the summer. Norra Tjust archipelago is a merger of three former nature reserves; Stora Grindö, Städsholmen and Jutskär.
On Städsholmen there is a jetty for the public. There are natural harbors on Lindö, Storkläppen, Lotsskackelsholmen and Viggskär. However, access is prohibited on Viggskär and several other areas from April 1 to July 10, see the reserve map.
Toilets and waste bins are available on Lotsskackelsholmen, Lindö and Städsholmen.

Rutevejledning
The reserve extends from Stora Grindö in the north almost all the way down to Hasselö and Sladö in the south. There is no regular boat traffic. The northern part of the area, with Stora Grindö as the main island, can be reached from land from Båtsviken at Lerglo, east of Loftahammar. The central and southern parts of the nature reserve, with Städsholmen and Jutskär as larger built-up islands, are reached from land from Hallmare, southeast of Loftahammar. A fairway passes straight through the nature reserve in a northerly direction. Otherwise, however, large parts of the archipelago are shallow and relatively difficult to navigate.
