Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
Mellstaby alvar is a mosaic of barren rocky areas, flower-rich grasslands and lush wet meadows. Here you can experience the alvar's unique plant and animal life. There are also several interesting ancient monuments in the area.
Large parts of Mellstaby alvar are open gravel alvar. In early summer, the alvar glows yellow with Öland's landscape flower, the Öland sunflower. It grows nowhere else in the world! On Mellstaby alvar, there are large quantities of the Öland sunflower.
There are several low moraine ridges in the reserve. The ridges consist of everything from large stones to fine-grained sand left by the ice sheet. The vegetation here looks a little different compared to the gravel alvar. Characteristic species include various grasses such as meadow oats and flentimothy, as well as the herbs wild linseed, wild bread and field bindweed.
The Överbäcken stream runs to the south. The small watercourse is bordered by beautiful wet meadows, where mayweed, meadowsweet and meadowsweet contribute with pink color splendor. The damp, occasionally flooded land is valuable for bird life. Here, waders such as the southern marsh wren, red-legged kittiwake and curlew can feed on all the bugs in the wetland.
People have lived and worked on Alvaret for thousands of years. There are plenty of ancient remains from the Iron Age onwards that are clearly visible in the open landscape - house foundations, stone circles, cairns as well as the remains of ancient fences for the cattle (stone strings). The reserve also has fine hollow ways. These are roads that have been worn by wandering cattle and people over the millennia.
