Beskrivelse

Pastures with pollarded lime trees spread out around the medieval Lindö farm. Fine footpaths wind through the old farmland, past small fields with well-made stone walls and rough pasture oaks. The trees are home to the leatherback beetle and other unusual beetles, and many different butterflies thrive in the open, flower-rich fields.

A living outdoor museum

At Lindö you walk through a historic landscape. This is how it looked in many places in Sweden, before the advent of modern agriculture. The fields are as small today as they were when farmers plowed them in the early 1800s. The hedgerow oaks have wide crowns because the land has been open for a long time. Many of them are also impressively large!

Lindblad for the animals

The reserve has many old, large lime trees with a distinctive appearance. The trunks of the trees are coarse and the branches start from a single point some way up the trunk. These trees have been pollarded. When they were pollarded, farmers harvested the leaves and branches of the trees to supplement their cattle's winter feed. Lindö's old lime trees are still pollarded, but the younger, thinner lime trees are also pruned. In this way, future visitors will also be able to see what a hammered tree looks like!

Rare bugs

The reserve's hollow and decaying deciduous trees are home to a number of rare beetles. One example is the leatherback beetle. If you smell leather next to an old oak tree, it is a sign that a leatherjacket lives inside the tree. But the leatherback beetle is difficult to spot. You have the best chance on sunny late summer days, when it can be seen crawling around on tree trunks.
