Beskrivelse

In Lidahult Nature Reserve you have the opportunity to experience a living piece of cultural history and a fascinating natural environment. Here is a traditionally managed hay meadow, where farmers from Lidahult farm have harvested winter feed for their animals for generations. Today, the hay is not vital for the farmer's cattle. However, a number of flowers, butterflies and other insects depend on the annual haymaking.

The farmer's most important land

A meadow is a grassland that is not fertilized or ploughed and is mowed with cutting tools once a year. In the past, the meadow was the farmer's most important type of land - the area of meadow was far greater than the area of arable land. Today, there are few traditionally managed hay meadows left, as agricultural modernization in the 20th century reduced the need for meadow hay. The traditionally managed meadow in Lidahult is therefore of cultural-historical value.

Endangered flower kingdom

The meadow is home to many plants and animals. There are flowers of all colors, which are visited by butterflies, bees and bumblebees in search of nectar and pollen. But many of the meadow's inhabitants have become increasingly rare as hay meadows have disappeared. Continued management of the meadow in the nature reserve is essential for biodiversity. Without mowing, or if the land is fertilized, the meadow flowers are replaced by tall plants and shrubs and the buzzing of bees and bumblebees is silenced.

How to manage a meadow

In the spring, the meadow is fertilized. This means that the meadow is cleaned of leaves and fallen twigs. Sometime during the summer it is time for mowing. In the past, meadows were mowed with a scythe, but nowadays a machine-driven mower is often used. Some of the trees in Lidahult's hay meadow bear traces of previous haymaking. The trees were pollarded in late summer, which meant that leaves and twigs were used to supplement the animals' winter feed. Today, the trees are hammered to preserve an old tradition, but also because they are home to a diversity of species.
