The reserve's meadows and pastures are home to lots of bugs and flowers. They would not be here if it were not for the fact that the land has been farmed for centuries. The reserve also has wetlands and deciduous forest. With such a varied nature, it is no wonder that so many different species thrive in Lenstad!
You are in an area where people have lived and worked since the early Iron Age. They have grown crops, cut hay and grazed their animals here for centuries. Many plants and animals thrive in this cultural landscape. Here in Lenstad there are still open fields left, even though a large part of the former agricultural landscape has grown back with deciduous forest.
Lenstad is a southern outpost of Mittlandsskogen, Öland's valuable deciduous forest area. Notice all the different tree species as you walk through the forest. Almost all our deciduous trees are found here. And keep your ears and eyes open, the forest is home to many different birds. One of these is the collared flycatcher, a cavity-nesting species that can live in both natural nesting holes and in cavities.
In the reserve, you can get acquainted with many different plants during spring and summer. If you want to see orchids, we recommend the reserve's wetlands and wet meadows. Among the sedges and sedges, you will find spearwort, flyflower, marsh marigold, meadow keys, St. Peter's keys, honeyflower and salep root. Mayflower, the cowslip's pink relative, also thrives where it is moist.
