Beskrivelse

The reserve's mosaic of forest and wetlands is home to many different plants and animals. Parts of the forest have burned, which has been positive for species diversity. The fire has favored deciduous trees and created dead wood, to the delight of beetles, woodpeckers and many other forest inhabitants.

Forest that takes care of itself

In the reserve you walk through coniferous forests, which in some parts have a large element of deciduous trees. Since the forest has not been used to any great extent, there are plenty of old and dead trees. The oldest pines were probably already sprouting in the 17th century!

Marked by fire

In the past, our forests burned regularly. Sometimes it was lightning that provided the spark, sometimes it was man. After the fire, aspen, birch and other deciduous trees were free to grow in the open, nutrient-rich fire areas. There are several of these old deciduous fires in the reserve. The aspen-rich deciduous fires are valuable for fungi, beetles, woodpeckers and others who like old deciduous trees and dead wood.

Moist and wet soil

There are many different wetlands in the reserve. In summer, the pine bogs offer fragrance and color, when the water primrose blooms and the cloudberries ripen. And dragonflies fly at full speed over the mirror-like surface of small pools. In the wettest parts of Drevsängsmossarna, spring grass thrives, a plant that is quite rare throughout the country. The mosquito-rich deciduous swamp forests may not be so inviting to us humans. But for moisture-loving lichens and mosses, it is a perfect environment.
