Beskrivelse
Krokshult is an older, well-preserved agricultural landscape. Small-scale agriculture dominated in southern Sweden, especially in the Småland highlands, right into the 20th century. So you're in areas that look the same as they have for hundreds of years. There are not many similar places left in Sweden, which makes Krokshult very valuable.
Meadow is the mother of fields
In the past, the meadow was the most important type of land on a farm. The animals got their winter feed from the meadow and the size of the meadow therefore determined how many animals a farm could feed. Manure from the animals was spread on the fields. The number of animals therefore in turn determined the size of the fields. This chain is the origin of the old saying 'The meadow is the mother of the field'.
Hamling
To supplement the winter fodder of the animals, farmers felled deciduous trees. The leaves and twigs of the trees were harvested and dried. In Krokshult, it is mainly ash that has been hammered. New trees are constantly being selected for pollarding, which means that the tradition lives on and thus forms part of our cultural heritage.
Valuable trees
A rich plant and animal life is linked to the hammered trees. Various mosses and lichens grow on the sunlit bark. Fungi and beetles use the wood, creating cavities in the trunk. Birds and bats settle in the cavities. Old pollarded trees are particularly valuable.
Rich flora
The nature reserve contains small fields and meadows and pastures surrounded by wooden fences. The long tradition of haymaking and grazing has left its mark on the flora. In addition to the plants depicted on the sign, the area is also home to, for example, haymaking creeper, haymaking viburnum, goldenrod, spurge, spiderwort and common carnation.
