Handlinger

Beskrivelse

In Ishult's forests you walk over moss-covered boulders and fallen trunks. The forest has been untouched for a long time, which makes it valuable for a wide range of plants and animals. The varied nature, with lakes and wetlands, also contributes to many different species thriving in the area.

Valuable forest...

The forest in Ishult nature reserve differs in many ways from a modern managed forest. There are old and coarse trees and a lot of dead wood, as the trees die of old age. Aspen, birch and oak grow in the mixed coniferous forests, and along the shoreline there is also alder. Different tree species and trees of different ages are typical of self-sustaining forests, which are usually called 'natural forests'.

...with room for many

Ishult's varied nature provides food and shelter for many different forest inhabitants. In the damp swamp forest, moorhens find plenty of insects for their chicks. Dead alder stumps are perfect nesting sites for the larvae of the alfalfa beetle. Old aspen trees are home to ticks and mosses, and the soft wood is grateful for woodpeckers to peck out nest holes. Abandoned woodpecker holes are often occupied by sparrow owls.

Meadows and old lake beds

In the western part of the reserve, it is still possible to see the remains of meadow barns. In the barns, Ishult's farmers stored the hay they harvested from the wetlands around Lake Hundeln. In addition to meadows, the farmers also needed arable land. Lowering the water level in Lake Hundeln created more land for cultivation. Names like Hundleängarna and Hundlegrund tell us about where farmers used to harvest hay and how Lake Hundeln used to spread out.
