Isgärde Nature Reserve is located on the western edge of Mittlandsskogen, a large deciduous forest area that spreads across central Öland. The reserve's lush deciduous forests are home to a rich plant and animal life with many rare species.
Mittlandsskogen is one of southern Sweden's largest deciduous forest areas. The area is characterized by human use from the Stone Age onwards. The cultural and natural values found here are unique in Europe.
Isgärde is part of the Mittlands Forest. There are high-stemmed oaks and ash trees and the occasional elm, lime and maple. The rare creeping elm and really old hazel bushes, which are very important for many fungal species, also grow in the forest. Many of the trees are over a hundred years old. Unfortunately, many elms and ash trees have died in recent years from various tree diseases.
Several unusual mosses, lichens and fungi have been found in the reserve. Olive scribble lichen, ox tongue mushroom, spotted tick and stink bug are just a few examples. The common marble is an exclusive species found in the area. Its fruiting bodies, which appear in May, are very short-lived.
A variety of herbs, including several orchids, thrive in the rich moss of the deciduous forest. The flowers of spring pea, toothwort and lungwort all show a varying palette of pink. A peculiar species is the water lily, a parasite that lacks chlorophyll and takes its nourishment from hazel and alder, among others.
