Ostkustleden
Välkommen att vandra fina Ostkustleden!
This reserve has preserved an old-fashioned agricultural landscape. Here you can walk on winding gravel roads past pollarded trees, fences and stone walls. It is perhaps at its most beautiful in spring and early summer, when the grassland and deciduous groves are in full bloom.
In the early 18th century, several crofters settled in this area. The crofters plowed up small fields and cut lush meadows. In connection with nationwide land reforms in the 1890s (laga skifte), the crofts were merged into one farm - Humlenäs. The farm's land is still used today as arable and pasture land.
There are still traces of arable and meadow farming at the Humlenäs farm. Field mounds, cairns, stone walls and fences are all reminders of past farming. So do all the pollarded trees. Pollarding meant making use of leaves and twigs to supplement the animals' winter feed. Above all, ash and lime trees were hammered, but maples were also used. Some trees are still hammered, both to preserve an old tradition and because it prolongs the life of the trees.
The reserve's varied nature is home to many animals and plants. The deciduous forest is home to wood anemones, wood sorrel and exciting mushrooms. Hazel bushes grow under the treetops, attracting nuthatches and other birds. In the pastures, you can find cowslips, coneflowers and maidenhair fern. If you're really lucky, you might see a sand lizard or a hazel snake warming itself on a rock.
Several marked hiking trails run through the reserve's open pastures and rich deciduous groves. If you want to take a shorter walk, you should choose one of the Blue Trail's loops. In the western and central parts of the reserve, the East Coast Trail winds its way, with overnight accommodation in Nynässtugan.
The East Coast Trail runs through the old-fashioned farming landscape. Shorter hiking trails are also marked within the reserve.
Dry toilets are available at the farm and at Nynässtugan along the East Coast Trail.
Nynässtugan is located along the East Coast Trail and is available for overnight stays.
Within the reserve, the Blue Trail hiking trail is marked. There is also a small swimming area in the reserve. See the sign that shows where you can go down to Hummelns beach.
