At Hulterstads alvar you can experience the barren and rare beauty of Stora alvar. The reserve offers magnificent views, a rich bird life and rare plants. There is much to discover here!
Stora alvaret in miniature
At Hulterstad's alvar, you are met by a very open landscape that is a mosaic of the alvar's typical environments. Gravel alvars dominate, and in the west there are areas of rocky ground broken by cracks (karst). On deeper soils, dry and wet meadows spread out like green islands.
Diverse flora
The Öland sunflower is the gravel alvar's number one character species. It is an endemic species, which means that Öland is its only habitat in the world. On the rocky outcrops, the fragrant thyme grows together with rarities such as the large sand lily, alvar rose and rock onion. The dry grasslands also have an exciting flora, with species such as the lesser celandine and alvar wormwood, the latter also endemic to Öland.
Rich bird life
The wet meadows around the Heljemossen wetland, in the south-eastern part of the reserve, are popular with birds, especially waders. Characteristic species include oystercatcher, lapwing and snipe. If you are lucky, you may also see ruff, curlew or red-tailed godwit. Out on the alvar, the heath pipit nests, whose wistful whistles are the alvar's own signature melody. Meadowhawks and brown harriers often sail over the open expanses in search of food.

Rutevejledning
The reserve is located just west of Hulterstad village on southeastern Öland. In the middle of the village is the turn-off to the parking lot at the beginning of the alvar. A farm road leads across the alvar to Lunda and from there you can continue Stora Alvarleden to Tingstad flisor.
Regler
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive a motorized vehicle.
- Camp more than one night in the same place.
- Bring a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Make a fire.
- Hunting, killing, capturing or harming wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds.
- Remove or damage eggs or nests.
- Deliberately disturbing wildlife.
- Damage or remove trees or shrubs that are growing or dead.
- Digging or pulling up plants or plant parts by the roots.
- Collect loose rocks or remove pieces of bedrock.
- Make tracks or organize orienteering competitions.
- Damage fencing (e.g. fences or barriers).
- Damage ancient monuments (e.g. stone walls, cairns, etc.)

C. Regulations according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general.
Within the area it is forbidden to:
- drive a motorized vehicle.
- camp more than one night in the same place.
- bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet.
- start a fire
- hunt, kill, capture or injure wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds, remove or damage eggs or nests or otherwise disturb wildlife
- damage or remove growing or dead trees and shrubs
- digging or pulling up plants or plant parts by their roots
- collecting loose rocks or breaking off pieces of bedrock
- cutting tracks, organizing orientation checks or similar.
- damaging fences
- damaging ancient monuments and historical remains such as cairns, walls and the like.
