Beskrivelse
The lake was originally called Hulund or Hålsjön because it is a shallow lake with a deep hole in its center.
Hulingen was an ore-rich lake and from here the ore was taken to the Hagelsrum blast furnace. At Järnudda is the area's largest settlement from the Early Stone Age. The site was probably originally an island in the middle of the lake. The abundant finds indicate that the settlement was used by larger groups over a longer period.
The next large settlement is at Ormestorp. The finds from the two settlements show great similarities and they may have been used in succession by the same population.
New finds from the northern shore of Hulingen indicate another settlement.
The southern part of the lake is a bird protection area with access prohibited from April 1 to July 31. About 250 bird species, of which about 110 are breeding, have been observed. In the fall, many raptors are seen. Småland's regional animal, the otter, has also been sighted here.
Hulingen is also a good fishing lake with nine species, including pike, perch, bream, roach and eel.
