Högenäs orde offers classic Öland nature, magnificent views and an outstanding array of flowers. Stone walls with a total length of 15,000 meters leave their mark on the open pasture landscape, whose character has been preserved over the centuries.
The county administrative board's budget for nature conservation and outdoor life sometimes changes and right now we have less money to allocate. The priority is then to manage our natural values in the first place and outdoor recreation facilities in the second place. As a result, this year we are closing a number of toilets in reserves and removing waste bins in several protected areas in the county.
In Högenäs orde, the toilet is closed and all waste management ceases.
Orde means cape in Ölandic. The headland in this reserve is a 700 meter long ridge, whose highest point reaches almost ten meters above sea level. Up on the hill you have a magnificent view of the sea and the coast. At Orde stands one of Öland's few preserved lighthouses - an old construction used since prehistoric times to signal danger.
In the spring you are greeted by an outstanding color splendor, when the orchids Sankt Pers nycklar and Adam and Eve bloom on the crest of the ridge. Among the rocks and juniper bushes, thyme and goat's beard spread a pleasant scent. In the wet meadows, orchids such as St. John's wort, spurge and meadowsweet take over. This is also where you can find the late May cranesbill.
On eastern Öland, the strip of land between the cultivated land and the shore is known as the lakeshore. The lakes are rich in birds. For example, lapwings, redshanks and oystercatchers nest in the reserve every year. In some years, avocets, little terns and curlews also breed. During spring and fall, hundreds of waders and seabirds rest along the reserve's shores.
