Gullaboås, Naturreservat
- Naturreservat
- Landsdel: Kalmar län och Öland
Handlinger
Beskrivelse
The forest in Gullaboås has been untouched for several decades. There are large trees, high stumps and fallen trunks. For species that do not thrive in managed forests, the reserve is a refuge.
From forestry to wilderness
In the nature reserve you can experience a forest that takes care of itself. Here the trees die of old age. Or natural processes such as insect infestation. Characteristic of natural forest is also the mix of tree species. In the reserve, spruce is most common, but there are also pine, aspen, birch, beech, willow and alder.
Signal species
Reed canary grass, blue moss, wood moss and long-lobed moss are examples of signal species found in the reserve. They are species typical of forests with high natural values. Another example is the old spruce lichen. It grows on old spruce trunks in areas where there has been forest for a long time.
Tracks in the fields
In the western part of the reserve there are the remains of a pair of cinder wolves. The cinder blocks are nine and four meters in diameter and overgrown with grass and moss. A slag heap was a pile of residual products from iron production. The iron was produced in blast furnaces. Perhaps the half-meter-high collection of over-dried, moss-covered stones adjacent to the warps are the remains of an old furnace? The iron was probably made using bog ore, which was probably taken from the nearby former wetland.
