Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
Plants, birds, lichens and fungi - they all thrive in Gillsättra's lush forest, in the middle of Mittlandsskogen. In addition to valuable nature, there are also exciting remains of an Iron Age village, among other things.
Gillsättra's broadleaf forest, with mainly oak, ash and elm, is typical of the Midlands Forest. The forest has grown up in calcareous loam on old meadows and has largely looked after itself. There are therefore trees of different ages and dead trees, both standing and lying. There are also many different species of trees and shrubs. The wild forest is a habitat for a large number of threatened species.
Fungi and lichens make up a large proportion of the nature reserve's unusual species. It can be difficult for the untrained eye to spot these rarities. It is all the easier with the vascular plants! Wood sedge, spring pea, wood anemone, toothwort, lungwort, common ragwort and fern - all are examples of species characteristic of lush broadleaf forests. Orchids such as soapwort and woodruff also grow in the broadleaf forest.
During the Iron Age there was a village here in Gillsättra. There are many remains from this time in the forest, such as stone walls, house foundations, graves and clearance cairns. You may come across some of these as you wander around the forest. Or perhaps a cairn from the 19th century. The remains bear witness to a farming history that goes way back in time, an era that ended in the 20th century.
