Beskrivelse

This island in the middle of the sea is unique in many ways. It is made of sandstone and has a very long cultural history. There are traces of man here from the Bronze Age to the present day.

Geology

Furön is located in the sea, 1 mile due east from Oskarshamn. The island is made up of 500 million year old sandstone from the Cambrian period. This bedrock is younger than the bedrock archipelago around Västervik in the north, but older than the moraine archipelago down towards Kalmar.

Sanctuary for long-distance migrants

The eastern part of the island is set aside as a bird protection area with access prohibited during the period 1/4 - 31/7. The reason for this is that Furön has a special and worthy of protection breeding bird fauna. There is, among other things, a colony of Caspian terns, the world's largest tern, a species that is highly endangered both in Sweden and throughout the rest of the Baltic Sea area. The Caspian tern, like other terns, is a true long-distance migrant and winters in the Niger Delta in tropical West Africa. It is best recognized by its size (somewhat larger than a seagull) and its powerful, blood-red beak. It often announces its presence with a loud, hoarse call. Other species that nest on Furön are the eider, blackbird, common tern and avocet.

Exciting nature

The island's nature is dominated by the sea. There is no continuous forest here, only a few pine trees and some spruce, oxel and rowan. Around the globe grow some groves of alder. The land is otherwise dominated by junipers, sloes and rose hips, but in places large shingle fields spread out. They are remnants of the land uplift and the swelling of the sea.

Cultural environment

On Furön there are remains from the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Middle Ages. The traces continue right into our time with the remains of a quarry from the first half of the 20th century. The ancient remains consist of graves, house foundations after seasonal fishing camps, a dug canal and boat landings. A boat slip is a sheltered mooring between two rows of stones. Furön used to have a pilot station. It was in use until 1965, when the crew was moved to the main station in Oskarshamn.
