Beskrivelse
Many of the inhabitants of this ancient beech forest have one thing in common. They depend on dead wood. And there is plenty of dead wood, as the forest hasn't been managed for a long time. So welcome to a walk among the stumps and fallen trunks in the kingdom of beetles, lichens and fungi!
A beech forest that has come of age
The forest in this reserve is different from a normal production forest. Many of the trees are old, between 100 and 150 years old. Some trees are even older. Because the trees are often infested with lichen and other rot fungi, which shortens their lives, there is plenty of dead wood in various forms. Notice all the standing dead trees, lying trunks and hollow stumps. This is what a real ancient forest should look like!
Dream home for bugs
Rough stumps and hollow beech trees are highly sought after by a range of rare beetles. They lay eggs in the decaying wood and then the larvae live in tunnels until it is time to pupate. The pupa hatches into an adult beetle, which crawls out into the open. Many of the beetles actually spend most of their lives in the wood and only a short period as an adult beetle.
The joy of discovery
It has long been known that the Denmark Road is an insect paradise. In 1965, forester Stig Lundberg was here with colleagues to investigate a rough beech stump. The search yielded results: no less than 78 different beetle species lived in the stump. Since then, many other entomologists (insect connoisseurs) have visited the area and found one rarity after another.

Rutevejledning
Turn south from road 34 in Långemåla, towards Böta Kvarn. Continue towards Gillberga about 1.5 km. Parking is available at the three-way junction. Högsbyleden passes by the reserve.
Regler
In the nature reserve you are not allowed:
- Drive motorized vehicles off designated roads or trails.
- Ride a horse.
- camp.
- Make a fire.
- Climbing trees with nests.
- Being closer than 100 meters to a bird of prey's nest, lair or burrow.
- Hunting, killing, capturing or harming wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds.
- Remove or damage eggs or nests.
- Damage or remove trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brush that are growing or dead.
- Dig, pull up or pick plants or plant parts. You may pick berries and edible mushrooms.
- Bring a dog or other animal that is not on a leash.
- Put up a board, sign, poster or similar device or make inscriptions.
- Damage or remove fixed natural objects or surface formations.
- Damage fixed ancient monuments (such as stone walls, cairns, etc.).
- Use the area for competitions or exercises.
After consultation with the County Administrative Board, you may:
- Conduct surveys or research.

C. Regulations according to Chapter 7, Section 30 of the Environmental Code on the right to travel and stay in the reserve and on order in general.
In addition to prohibitions and regulations in other legislation, it is prohibited to
- drive motorized vehicles other than on existing roads,
- riding a horse
- camping
- make fires
- disturbing wildlife by climbing trees or deliberately staying closer than 100 m to a bird of prey's nest, lair or burrow
- hunt, kill, capture or injure wild mammals, amphibians, reptiles or birds, remove or damage eggs or nests
- damage or remove growing or dead trees, stumps, bark, branches, bushes or brush
- digging up or picking plants or parts of plants except berries and edible mushrooms
- bring an unleashed dog or other stray pet
- put up a board, poster, sign, poster or similar device or make an inscription
- destroy, remove or damage a fixed natural object or surface formation,
- damage fixed ancient monuments,
- use the area for competition or training purposes. Surveys or research must be carried out in consultation with the County Administrative Board.
