Mörbylånga kommun - Öland
Välkommen till vårt fantastiska friluftsliv i v...
Dalby lund is a green island in an otherwise open field and alvar landscape. Old stately elms are a characteristic feature of the lush broadleaf forest, which is also home to a number of unusual birds, herbs and fungi.
As you wander through the grove, you're walking on land that has been used for haymaking and grazing for thousands of years. But it's been a long time since anyone harvested hay or let animals out for summer grazing here. When grazing ceased, deciduous trees were able to sprout and grow in the rich soil. Nature has been left to take care of itself and the result is a lush broadleaf forest with stately giant trees!
The reserve's oldest tree giants grow in the southern part of the reserve. Here there are elms that are over 100 years old. Elm forests like this are rare, both in Sweden and in the rest of Europe.
Many species thrive in Dalby Lund's broadleaf forest. The spring flora includes wood anemone, wood sorrel and wood onion. It is also possible to distinguish less common species such as hollow needlewort and cross-leaved alder. Lichen and fungi such as pink lichen and ox tongue fungus grow on the tree trunks. Perhaps you will come across the magnificent thorny mushroom, which has a beautiful brick-red to orange color. It is a picky species that prefers to grow on dead elm trunks and branches in forests on calcareous soil.
Around thirty different birds nest in Dalby grove. One reason for the species richness is all the hollow trees in the forest. Many of the nesting birds are species that live in hollows, such as starlings, wood pigeons and green wrens. In the spring, the small birds hold a concert, with collared flycatchers and gray flycatchers among the singers!
In the grove there are remains of stone walls (old fences) from the Iron Age. The remains show that the grove was already meadow and pasture land 2,000 years ago. North of the grove is one of Öland's largest burial grounds and a number of prehistoric house foundations.
