The western coast of Bödakusten offers varied nature with long sandy beaches, windswept pine forests, lush broadleaf forests and flower-rich meadows and alvar. In addition to its popular beaches, the area is also known for its rich plant and animal life.
The nature of the reserve is dominated by sandy soils. Where the sea meets the land there are long sandy beaches. Running parallel to the beaches are sand dunes, which in some places are up to ten meters high. At Byrum, the dunes spread out to form one of Sweden's largest dune areas. The sandy environments are home to many unusual plants, insects and fungi.
There are few places in Sweden with old sand pine forests. When you walk across Byrum's sandy fields, you pass centuries-old pine trees. The twisted, crooked trees bear witness to a hard upbringing in the lean, windswept soils. There are also plenty of large, sun-exposed pines in the reserve. These trees are sought-after homes for a number of rare insects. Sun-warmed, calcareous sandy soil is another environment with many unusual species. A characteristic bird of the pine forests is the nightjar, whose insistent buzzing can be heard on still early summer nights.
In the south are two botanical gems - Bränsle äng and Mensalvaret. In Bränsle äng, the field primrose blooms in spring. Bluebells, celandine and sundew are other plants that the meadow offers. The Mensalvaret meadow is home to the bridal flower, wild linden and the orchid flyflower. In the open fields, you can also see colorful butterflies and strange mushrooms.
The sandy beach at Byrum offers great swimming opportunities. The Bödaleden trail runs through the reserve. The forests here are very good berry fields, especially for blueberries.
