Beskrivelse

The reserve's sandy soils are home to a distinctive pine forest with windswept, twisted silver pines. The barren environment is home to exclusive species, which only live in a few places in Sweden. The reserve also offers fine beaches and a hiking trail.

Sand

The nature of the reserve has one common denominator and that is sand. Here is Öland's longest sandy beach. Towards the shore, ten meter high sand dunes rise and within these, flying sand fields spread out. The dune area with flying sand is one of Sweden's largest and home to a number of rare species associated with sandy soils.

Peculiar pine forest

There are few places in Sweden with sand pine forests like this one in Böda. On your walk through the sparse forest you pass both stately pines and gnarled, twisted silver trunks. The oldest pines are up to 200 years old.

Valuable trees

The reserve's old and dead pines are home to a number of rare beetles. If you look closely at the trees, you will see that the bark is full of holes. These are the hatching holes of beetles and other insects, which lived inside the wood as larvae and gnawed their way out when fully grown.

Bird-rich

If you visit the reserve on a quiet early summer night, you might hear the insistent buzzing of the nightjar. Another nocturnal character bird in the area is the woodlark. It thrives in the borderland between the pine forest and more open land.

Visitor and parking information

A large part of what is Öland's longest sandy beach is within the reserve. Large numbers of bathers are attracted here every year. From Fagerrör to Trollskogen runs a railroad that was built in the early 1900s to ship out timber from the crown park. The railway is now used as a museum railway with tourist traffic during the summer.

**There are toilets and picnic tables adjacent to the beaches at Lyckesand, Homrevet and Fagerrör. Summer catering is available at Lyckesand.
