Beskrivelse
As far back as the 15th century, the island of the Blue Virgin was surrounded by magical beliefs about witches and witchcraft, but it is also home to a diversity of plants and animals.
The lush deciduous forest south of the summit is home to an abundance of flora and rare lichens. The deciduous forest is home to a number of unusual beetles. The island also has a rich bird life with species such as white-tailed eagles, avocets and guillemots.
Blå Jungfrun's area measures 65 hectares, which is two-thirds of the national park's area. The rest is water. The rock itself is the reason why the island has been protected as a national park. Granite dominates, but there are also younger rocks that have interested scientists. The island's rounded profile and softly sculpted rocks are shaped by the ice sheet. The island's many potholes were also formed during the Ice Age.
