Beskrivelse

Bergholmen is a fitting name for this rocky outcrop in Grytfjärden. On the acidic, lean bedrock, which rises 30 meters above the water surface, grows rock pine forest. Although the gnarled pines don't look like much, many of them have reached an impressive age.

Unassuming pine forest

Most of the pines on Bergholmen are over 150 years old, and several of them are approaching 200 years. This is hard to believe, as the trees give a modest impression in terms of height and size. The fact that the trees are not larger, despite their age, is due to the thin and poor soil cover. But here and there on the island, where the soil cover and the nutrient supply allow, you can also see really big and tall pines.

Lichen carpets with sound

There's a crunch and crackle under the soles of your shoes as you walk around the island on a dry summer day. It is the drought-resistant reindeer lichens that make themselves known. There are several different types of reindeer lichen and together they color the rocks in different shades of grey and white-yellow. The decorative reindeer lichen is used as an ornament at Christmas. They are often sold under the misnomer 'white moss'.

Wood mushrooms with high requirements

Look up at the silver-gray trunks of the pines and look closely! What you thought at first glance was a broken branch may in fact be the inconspicuous pine shoot. You'll know that the tree it's growing on is more than 150 years old. Because the pine shoot is so picky, it is also unusual.

Dead wood - yummy for bugs

The forest on Bergholmen is allowed to live and die at its own pace. Dead trees quickly become home and food for a myriad of insects. That's why you are not allowed to pick and burn dead trees and branches in the nature reserve.

Marked by the ice

There's not much that can stand up to the hard bedrock. But kilometers-thick inland ice is hard to resist. The fact that Bergholmen has been exposed to the forces of the ice is visible to the north and southwest, where the rock is rounded and polished.
