Beskrivelse

Bergholmen offers dramatic scenery. The steep rocky island rises high above the sea and from its top you have a fantastic view of Gudingefjärden.

Ancient island

Bergholmen is one of many thousands of islands in the Västervik archipelago. Islands, islets and skerries are made up of ancient rock that is around 2000 million years old. Something to ponder as you wander over the gray, sanded rocks! The bedrock of Bergholmen consists of quartzite, a hard and relatively unusual rock.

Pine and oak

The roaring east wind rarely reaches Bergholmen, thanks to a land barrier of larger islands out towards the outer archipelago. Trees can therefore take root here, something that is not possible on the outer archipelago's bare islands. Pine is the characteristic species, but where there is slightly deeper soil, oak also grows. The curved, late-growing oaks are called scrub oaks and, despite their small size, can be quite old.

Winged inhabitants

There is a rich bird life in the archipelago. Eider, grebe, lapwing and graylag goose are among the more common guests. If you're lucky, a sea eagle might sail past in the sky. This mighty bird of prey is once again one of the archipelago's characteristic birds after decades of successful conservation work.
