Experience how bricks were made in the past!

The Brickworks Museum is located in Almvik, 15 km north of Västervik along the E22. Here you can experience

what it was like to work at a brickworks in the past and how the production with simple

tools worked.

The brickworks date back to the mid-17th century. The current facility is just over a hundred years old,

with the ring kiln (1878) and the long drying barn as the main buildings.

The brickworks are preserved as they were when the factory closed in 1971. On the premises you will find

a monumental painting by Lars Jönsson and three sculptures by Gösta Holmer

depicting workers at the factory.

When you visit the museum, you can go on a tour where the different stages of production and

machines are explained by a knowledgeable guide and watch a documentary short film in the museum's film room. The

also have the opportunity to explore the museum on your own.

Tegelbruket is beautifully situated right on the shore of Gamlebyviken. In the area

there are a number of buildings, including the large drying barn, kiln, mill, sawmill and carpentry.

On the large grassy areas you can let the children play or eat a picnic. Are you in the mood for

a bath, you can follow the path down to Almvik's nice municipal bathing area, a few hundred meters

away (see the sketch map). There are jetties, playground and toilet. At the museum we sell ice cream and

postcards.

Almvik is located midway between Gamleby and Västervik along the E22. Turn off at the red house marked "Almviks Café" and park outside. Then cross the railway on foot (be careful) and walk a couple of hundred meters down towards the bay to get to the museum. The road is signposted.
