Beskrivelse

Åsebo's diverse natural environments are a haven for a wide range of unusual and endangered species. Many of these are linked to old, rough broadleaf trees and dead wood. The nature reserve is particularly valuable for wood-dwelling beetles.

Ancient farmland

The nature reserve is located on the old farmland of the village of Åsebo. Former fields can be seen as stone-cleared areas in the terrain. In the former hay meadows there are old, large trees that bear traces of pollarding. Large oaks with wide crowns show that the landscape was more open in the past than it is today.

Forest and pastures

Today, broadleaf forests grow on large parts of the former farmland. Oak dominates, but lime, maple and aspen also grow here. Birch and alder grow where it is damp. Some old fields and hay meadows in the eastern and southern parts of the area are kept open by grazing animals.

Home to many

Along the gravel road and to the east of it are several hundred-year-old, large oak trees that are hollow. These giant trees are home to the larvae of the rare leatherback beetle. It takes three to four years for them to develop into full-grown beetles. Other species worthy of protection that live in the oak trees are the beetles narrow-mouthed weevil, cardinal red skirt and oak tree runner.

Species rich

A very valuable lichen flora grows on the pasture's old oaks and older pollarded trees, with unusual species such as yellow drop lichen, old oak lichen and pink shield lichen. Rare lichens also grow on trees and boulders in the forest. Here the humidity is even and high, which suits many fungi and mosses, such as ragwort, coarse baron moss, tree porella and narrtagging.

Rapids with rich life

The Emån is one of Sweden's most valuable watercourses. Stretches of rapids and flowing water at Åsebo are important spawning and nursery areas for salmon and sea trout. Catfish live in the calmer, deeper parts of the watercourse. Unusual mussels such as the thick-shelled mussel, the flat mussel and the true mussel also live in the river. Otters are a regular visitor, and in winter, oystercatchers head for the ice-free waters in search of food.
