Beskrivelse
The Åby nature reserve protects a stretch of the Emån river and its surroundings. The Emån is one of the country's most valuable watercourses. The varied wetlands and deciduous forests along the river are also home to a rich plant and animal life.
One of the country's most valuable rivers
The water of the Emån flows through the reserve, sometimes slowly, sometimes plunging in rapids and falls. The Emån is one of Sweden's most species-rich watercourses with 30 different fish species. It is one of the country's most important watercourses for the endangered species of catfish and thick-shelled mussel. It also has a unique population of salmon and sea trout. Asp, water vole and water vole are other unusual species that live in the clear waters of the Emån.
Rich bird life
The wetlands are of great importance for a number of nesting and resting birds. In early spring, for example, large flocks of whooper swans and geese can be seen, as well as playing snipe and lapwings.
Species-rich swamp forests
Adjacent to the river and wetlands grow lush swamp deciduous forests, deciduous forests that are often flooded. The varying water flow stresses the trees and causes many to die prematurely. The dead trees attract beetles and other wood-boring insects. Dead wood is also important for mosses, lichens, fungi, woodpeckers and other birds.
Farmed land
The reserve contains extensive, open wetlands. In the past, a large part of these lands were used as hay meadows and pastures. In the 1940s, there were as many as 15 meadow barns along the river, which testifies to the importance of the wetlands for the hay harvest at that time. The island in the southern part of the reserve is still mown and grazed today.
Hiking trail
The Mönsterås trail runs through parts of the reserve.
