Beskrivelse

Vindrarp's nature is exciting and varied. The reserve is located on Hallandsåsen and the terrain constantly slopes upwards, so expect a demanding hike if you decide to climb the ridge. From the northern parts of the reserve to the southern parts up on the ridge, the height difference is about 160 meters.

It's a good idea to have good footing when you climb Hallandsåsen. Streams run down the slope from the wetlands at the top of the plateau. In a couple of places, the water has carved deep ravines in the ground. The soil is rich in lime, which means that the water is not acidified. This suits sea trout that migrate up the streams from the sea. By the rippling water you can also spot the lively white-tailed deer. It runs around on the rocks in search of insects and other goodies it finds in the stream. Along the occasionally powerful and watery stream in the gorge at Berg in the eastern part of the area, there are stretches where water power was once used to grind grain. There are remains of several grist mills here.

Many different types of trees in the forest

Vindrarp is dominated by deciduous forest of various kinds, beech forest, mixed deciduous forest, hazel with hazel and swamp forest with alder to name a few examples. Less common species of trees such as elm, ash and bird's-foot trefoil are also richly represented, and there are several wooded pastures in the area. The fact that the reserve has such a wide variety of tree species is quite unique in Halland and can partly be explained by the characteristics of the soil.

Rich flora by the streams

At the bottom of the slope, springs run out on a broad front. The limestone-rich soil and the constant seepage of water favor the ground flora and the large mix of tree species. The streams and springs are home to species such as meadow saxifrage, meadowsweet, marsh marigold, cabbage thistle, stinkweed, woodruff, wood sorrel and wood anemone. Especially in the ravines, the beech is tall and coarse, but otherwise deciduous swamp forest with alder, ash and birch dominates in the wetter areas.

The beech trees Adam and Eve

A nice feature of the reserve is the pastures that break off the closed deciduous forest on the slope. Here animals graze among ash, alder, hazel and flowering shrubs such as rosehip, blackthorn, hawthorn, blackberry and alder. The orchid green night violet also grows here, but remember that it is protected and must not be picked. In a pasture in the lower part of the slope you can visit "Adam and Eve". The name does not refer to the orchid but to two old beech trees protected as a natural monument. When they were protected in 1964, Adam measured 5.6 meters in circumference and Eve 3.5 meters. Unfortunately, Adam fell on its post in a storm in 1999 and is now lying on the ground like a huge wreck, but Eve is still standing.

A few hundred years ago

If you go back a few hundred years, Vindrarp looked different from what it does today. Several crofts were established here from the 18th century onwards. Those who lived here and in the surrounding area farmed the land on the ridge, planted new crops and let their animals graze on the outlying fields. Towards the end of the 18th century, the forests on the ridge had become increasingly sparse, while the heather moors had spread. In the early and mid-19th century, deciduous forests remained in the reserve area only on the lower slopes of the ridge. From the end of the 19th century, the heather moors began to be covered with forest again, through planting with coniferous forest and through natural regrowth. A total of seven crofts can be found in the reserve, but they have long been in ruins.
