Beskrivelse
Trönninge ängar is a popular destination for birdwatchers. The wetlands and grazed grasslands make Trönninge ängar an important resting place for ducks, geese and waders. In the southern part of the reserve there is a hide where there are good opportunities to study the birds at close range. Access is prohibited all year round within the largest part of the nature reserve.
Measures are currently underway in the reserve
Adjustments are currently being made to improve the future management of the area. The work takes about 2-3 weeks to complete, mainly with an excavator, and is expected to be completed in early March.
Many measures are being taken to benefit bird life and to provide visitors to the area with better experiences. There will be over 30 measures in the reserve and some examples of this are building a wader restaurant, creating tern islands, moving an island, clearing ditches etc. There will also be several fence walkthroughs to facilitate the work of the important protection hunters and the work with grazing animals.
An area west of the E6 in the southern part of the area is also currently being cleared and fenced. Preparations are also being made to monitor breeding birds in the spring.
For more than fifty years, Trönninge ängar has been a popular bird site for Halmstad's ornithologists. Today, the site also attracts visitors interested in nature from near and far. It is one of the most popular bird sites in Halland, partly because it is so easily accessible. The hide and bird tower can be reached by car and there is space in the parking lot to accommodate large numbers of visitors. Visitors are mainly school classes, ornithologists and the general public interested in nature.
Wetlands attract birds
Thanks to the wetlands and the grazed grasslands that surround them, the area is now an important resting place for flocks of ducks, geese and waders. During the non-breeding season, the meadows attract large numbers of graylag geese, among which there are usually plenty of barnacle geese and the occasional white-fronted and white-fronted geese. Common species are also mallard, teal, curlew and ruff during fall and spring.
Laughing gulls and marsh harriers
Lesser black-backed gulls, black terns, black-necked grebes and curlews are seen more irregularly. In summer, many birds such as avocets, curlews and marsh harriers nest on Trönninge meadows. A large gull colony has also established itself in the wetland, and the rare marsh tit nests at the treatment plant ponds. During ice-free winters, the area is used as a wintering ground for geese and mallards. The farmland, which is plowed or reseeded during the winter in the immediate vicinity of the wetlands and pastures, contributes to the attractiveness of the roosting site.
Both constructed and natural wetlands
Trönninge ängar consists mainly of open, low-lying and sandy wet meadows and fields that are flooded to varying degrees during the spring. The Fylleån river, which runs along the western edge of the meadows, is a Natura 2000 site designated for the native salmon population. Sea trout, sea lamprey and eel also migrate in the Fylleån. The reserve contains both constructed and natural open wetlands. In the far south is a sewage treatment plant dam that is completely surrounded by trees.
From bird protection area to reserve
Trönninge ängar became a bird protection area in 1981 to prevent disturbance during the birds' breeding season. In 2018, the Trönninge ängar reserve was formed and through this decision, the area has received stronger and more long-term protection.
