Beskrivelse
Stora Drängabjär is part of Åkulla beech forests. Here you will find beech forests on mountain slopes with views of Skärsjön. If you want to discover the area, the hiking trails Bergastigen (3.9 km) and Slottsstigen (3.2 km) run partly through the reserve.
Stora Drängabjär is dominated by steep slopes with beech forest and rocky cliffs that slope down towards Skärsjön. The forest is partly of an untouched character with the presence of dead wood in the form of high stumps and flames. There is also some birch forest along the lake.
Several red-listed species
A total of 13 red-listed species have been found in the area, such as the common lichen, small noble lichen, beech feather moss, large banded moss and wood pigeon. The area is also home to the giant sponge moth, whose larvae depend on the presence of ticks on the trees.
History of the area
In the 1970s, several beech forest reserves were established within the Åkulla beech forests national interest. The areas were set aside primarily for outdoor recreation. Later, the biological values have been recognized and the natural values around Stora Drängabjär were mapped through inventories in the mid-1990s. In early 2006, the area became a nature reserve.

The reserve is part of Åkulla beech forests. It is a collective name for about ten similar nature reserves that are located in the same scenic area. The reserves are linked by a system of hiking trails. The Åkulla area has a café and restaurants. There is also accommodation in hotels, hostels and B&Bs.

Stora Drängabjär is located in Varberg municipality.By foot: Hallandsleden passes next to the reserve.Public transport: Bus stop "Öströö" (During the period 17/6 - 18/8 2024, the stop is served by the seasonal bus line Åkturen. More information and timetable at visitvarberg.se)Car: From Tvååker drive towards Dagsås and continue towards Öströ. A little less than a kilometer after Öströ farm, a smaller road goes left towards Skärbäck and Stora Drängabjär. The parking lot is along the road. GPS (WGS84): Lat N 57° 5' 0" Lon E 12° 31' 2".
Regler
To protect the nature reserve, the County Administrative Board has decided on special regulations, including those that you as a visitor to the area must follow and respect.
In addition to what applies under other legislation, it is forbidden to:
- damage living or dead standing or lying trees and shrubs and damage the vegetation in general, e.g. by digging up plants,
- catch or collect invertebrates without the permission of the County Administrative Board
- erecting a board, poster, poster, sign or making an inscription
- digging or otherwise destroying or damaging a fixed natural object or surface formation,
- drive a motorized vehicle on the terrain or park other than in a designated place,
- camping or setting up a caravan or motorhome,
- make fires other than in a specially designated place,
- bring an unleashed dog or other loose pet,
- ride or drive a horse
- permanently store boats
- ride bicycles in the terrain, other than on specially designated trails,
- without the permission of the County Administrative Board, organize competitions or other activities that may cause soil wear or may disturb wildlife, and
- without the permission of the County Administrative Board, conduct scientific studies that contravene the regulations.
