Särdal, Naturreservat

Särdal has natural pastures with exciting geological formations. The pasture belongs to the open coastal landscape between Bobergs udde in the north and Ringenäs in the south, which has been characterized by grazing for millennia and is one of the country's most valuable agricultural landscapes. Here you will find plants and colorful meadow fungi that thrive on poor soil. The reserve is perhaps most beautiful to visit in May, when the ground is colored pink by lots of wildflowers.

One of the highlights of the year in the reserve is the flowering of the woodruff in the latter part of May when the ground is colored by millions of woodruff flowers. The reserve is also home to a real rarity - the rare and endangered plant ivy. In Sweden, the species only grows in a handful of places, all located in Halland. The species, which is light-demanding and benefits from grazing, flowers throughout the summer months.

Grazing herbs, fungi and birds

The large pasture has probably been grazed continuously since the Bronze Age. The grazing and the absence of manure have characterized the vegetation over the millennia. Light-demanding plants dominate the pasture. These species would quickly be outcompeted by tall herbs and shrubs if grazing ceased. During the summer, thyme, yellow poppies and bluebells, for example, flower. Many different sand dandelions and dwarf dandelions - small dandelions with lobed leaves - also grow here. In late summer and autumn, various meadow fungi favored by grazing can be found in the area. One of the most common is the top waxcap. In the open fields, skylarks and skylarks like to visit, as well as red-legged kittiwakes and greater sandpipers.

Traces from the ice age

Three hundred meters up from the beach, a prominent sea wall runs parallel to the sea. Inside the sea wall, three more walls lie side by side, packed with flat pebbles. The sea walls, which mark ancient shorelines, were formed around 4,500 years ago. At that time, the sea level was much higher than it is today, as the oceans were filled with meltwater from the huge ice sheets.
