Mjällbjär is a hilly beech forest area that offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. The reserve is dominated by beech, but there are also scree fields and mountain slopes. A footpath passes through the northern half of the area and just north of the reserve is the Hallandsleden trail.
The reserve is part of Åkulla beech forests. It is a collective name for a dozen similar nature reserves located within the same scenic area. The beech forest dominates, but there are also limestone bogs, swamps and mountain slopes in the area. The altitude in the area is between 70 and 180 meters above sea level and there are both rounded heights and steep rock walls.
Mountain slopes are often favorable environments for many organisms. In Mjällbjär, about twenty red-listed or otherwise interesting species have been found, such as noble crown lichen and violet-grey porcupine lichen. Some birds that can be found in the reserve are the woodpecker, which despite its name is a woodpecker.
Mjällbjär took its current form in 2005 when it was expanded and merged with the Björka reserve. However, Mjällbjär has existed since 1976, when it was formed to preserve the beech forest and the areas around Mjällsjön. Following a survey of the natural values in the area in the 1990s, the reserve was expanded and reorganized in 2005.
A map from 1920 shows that two fields existed in the central parts of the reserve. There was also a stone fence for pigs, known as an ollon chain, and an old croft. Historical information is also available for the eastern parts of the reserve, which are said to have been common to Köinge parish.
