Beskrivelse
Långanskogen is the county's largest contiguous alpine swamp forest. The dense, dark, damp forest is home to many rare species, especially mosses and lichens. Walking in Långanskogen gives a feeling of being in a jungle. But it is difficult to walk in places and the ground is very wet.
The alders in Långanskogen stand on so-called plinths, which consist of roots that form a network that "supports" the trunk. The swamp forest is a perfect environment for mosses and lichens, cryptogams. Many cryptogams are demanding species that are only found in very specific environments. Examples of unusual species in the reserve are the ear lichen, mussel lichen and the moss brynia.
Springs and spring streams
The downy moss is a rare and endangered species that can only grow at mineral-rich springs. It is an indicator species for this type of environment. This means that where you find downy moss, you know that there are springs where groundwater is constantly emerging from the ground.
Rich plant and animal life
The lush swamp forest has an interesting flora, with species such as dwarf horsetail, goldenrod and fern. The abundance of dead wood also contributes to the biodiversity of the reserve. Birds, such as the lesser spotted woodpecker, forage in the decaying tree trunks.
Swimming and eating
There is a swimming area at Byasjön. Ästad has a hostel/hotel and also a café and restaurant.

Rutevejledning
Långanskogen is located in Varberg municipality.By foot: Hallandsleden runs through the reserve.Public transport: Bus stop "Ästad" (During the period 17/6 - 18/8 2024, the stop is served by the seasonal bus line Åkturen. More information and timetable at visitvarberg.se)Car: From road 154 between Falkenberg and Ullared take towards Sibbarp and then towards Ästad. In Ästad there is a sign towards Långanskogen. There is no parking lot, so you are responsible for ensuring that your car is not in the way or parked inappropriately.
Regler
To protect the nature reserve, the County Administrative Board has decided on special regulations, including those that you as a visitor to the area must follow and respect.
In addition to what applies under other legislation, it is forbidden to:
- damage living or dead, standing or lying trees and shrubs and damage the vegetation in general, e.g. by digging up plants,
- make fires other than in designated places
- driving a motorized vehicle off-road, or
- parking other than in designated areas,
- riding or driving a horse, driving off-road
- bicycles
- affixing a billboard, poster, poster, sign, inscription or similar device
- mark out tracks, organize orienteering or other competitions that may disturb the natural environment, and
- erect any form of jetty or mooring device
- keep a dog unleashed.
