Important habitats in the Baltic Sea

This particular stretch of coastline is home to three of the Baltic Sea's five so-called habitat-forming species. These are bladderwrack, blue mussels and red algae. Habitat-forming means that they create habitats for other species to settle, reproduce and forage in. This makes them special key habitats in our amazing inland Baltic Sea.

For example, a bladder wrack can have around one hundred individuals of different species living there. Everything from worms to barnacles to barnacles. Think about that the next time you snorkel past some bladderwrack. Stop and see if you can find any living there.
