Jonasesmyran, Naturreservat

In July 2018, one of Sweden's largest forest fires in modern times started in Ljusdal municipality. There was also a fire in the Jonasesmyran nature reserve. It is now allowed to visit the area but you should be careful as trees may fall. The forest in Jonasesmyran was old, often grand-dominated with trees up to 250 years old, in parts large elements of old and coarse aspen.

Jonasesmyran is located about 4 kilometers south of Kårböle, on a north-facing slope and in an east-facing large terrain depression east of Mount Kölen and covers 64 hectares of natural forest area.

The forest in the reserve was a pronounced natural forest, often spruce-dominated with an unusually high age, trees up to over 250 years. In places, there was a large element of old and coarse aspen. The spruces here had an unusually high age. There is also a small section of fire-affected pine forest in the area. The forest has been little affected by forestry in the last 100 years.

Underground stream

A stream, which initially moves underground, permeates the ground, meanders eastwards through the area's aspen-rich spruce forests, past herb-rich drops and swamp forest areas. On the northern slope, the moisture-demanding cat-footed lichen is abundant on the old spruce trees, while other parts are rich in hanging lichen. In the eastern part of the reserve there is a wetland, Bumyran.

Red-listed species in Jonasesmyran

The terrain and the long forest continuity contribute to a stable and humid local climate that favors a number of red-listed species. It is a Swedish species that is threatened and/or disadvantaged. The red list is produced by the Species Information Center, which assesses the degree of extinction risk. In Jonasesmyran there are, for example, three-toed woodpecker, woodruff, green clover, scented tick, large aspen tick, yarn lichen, violet-grey thorn lichen and wood bumblebee moss.

The area is in close proximity to the Gebbarn area, which in the "Strategy for formal protection of valuable forests in Gävleborg County" is a designated value area for spruce forest, mixed coniferous forest, deciduous forest and deciduous forest.
