Beskrivelse
Blacksås has long been known as a fabled viewing mountain with a dramatic cliff to the east. In the area you can hike on one of the many trails. From the new wind shelter at the top of the mountain, you have a fantastic view of the landscape all the way to the Bothnian Sea. From the top of the mountain Blacksås you have a fantastic view of the landscape, all the way out to the coast. Blacksås has long been known as a fabled viewing mountain with a dramatic slope to the east. Here you will encounter both a southern forest with linden and maple, and a late-growing coniferous forest that almost resembles mountain forest.
Rocky outcrops and miles of views
The mountain Blacksås rises a full 457 meters above sea level, and 270 meters above the surface of the adjacent Blacksåstjärn in Hudiksvall municipality. The dramatic escarpment to the east is one of the county's highest precipices, with partly vertical walls. Below these is a primeval forest, and large boulder fields where some blocks are as big as houses.
Climbing the mountain from the east involves a fairly demanding climb of 1.5 kilometers. An alternative is to go to Oppsjöskogens nature reserve on the flatter west side of the mountain and from there follow Sjuvallsleden up the mountain. A hike of 1.6 kilometers. From the new wind shelter at the top, you have a fantastic view of the nearby Blacksåsvallen pasture, and all the way to the sea in the east.
Varied forest
The forest at Blacksås consists of a strange mix of different forest types. On the plateau, the late-growing coniferous forest most closely resembles a mountain forest. On the slopes, instead, there is a leafy, primeval spruce forest, including lime and maple, reminiscent of environments in southern Sweden.
It is in the slopes and their surroundings that the reserve's greatest biological values are found. The rugged terrain in the ravines has protected the forest from human impact, giving it a primeval forest character.
Important habitat for woodpeckers
In some parts there are plenty of older aspens, which provide an important habitat for woodpeckers. Both the Three-toed Woodpecker and the Gray Woodpecker have been seen here. Other species that have been found in the area are violet-grey thorn lichen, jelly lichen, large aspen tick and capercaillie.
