Rotsjön

Far away from towns and civilization, on the border between Dalarna and Gästrikland, lies this almost untouched forest area that offers a high wilderness feeling. Since the forest has not been affected much by forestry, it has retained its natural character. There are virtually no paths or roads in the area, so you can roam freely in the forest.

It is an old coniferous forest that has retained the species composition and age variation of the natural forest. Pine, spruce and coniferous mixed forests alternate with large trees and a good supply of dead wood (standing and lying dead trees). Pines also grow on the marshland that stretches between lakes Rotsjön and Rotsjööga. Both living pines and dead wood bear traces of previous fires.

On the dead wood, unusual wood fungi such as the starry fungus, flesh tick and wrinkled skin can be found. The spectacular lungwort is found on older hardwoods. On the ground, the small white-flowered orchid knotweed grows abundantly, which is only found in older forest stands. The typical birds of the old-growth forest are present, such as capercaillie, black tit, redstart, three-toed woodpecker and various owls.

Rotsjön is located 9 km southeast of Svabensverk and the county border divides the area into two separate nature reserves.
