Fakta
Grangärde Church in words and pictures GRANGÄRDE or GRENGHE, which is the original name of the parish, was first mentioned in 1366. It probably derives from the dialectal verb gränja = howl, scream, whine. Grängen, which means the howling one, would be an older name for Bysjön.
Unfortunately, no written documents have survived about the church's older history. At the bishop's visitation in 1767, it was noted in the minutes that "the age of the church could not be determined, but was believed to be considerable and to have begun around the year 1400". According to experts, the church should have been built in the latter half of the 15th century. It then had a sacristy and a northern chapel. The walls were crowned with a brick frieze with the same profile as in Torsång. Below the frieze is a sunken band with painted vines and decorative brick and plaster faces. Brick vault of unknown appearance.
