Beskrivelse

When you visit the nature reserve Västra Torsö, you can hike in gnarled pine forest on fossil sand dunes or experience natural beech and alpine swamp forests. The nature values are high and the cultural history is long. In summer, the adjacent beach is a popular destination.

Västra Torsö is a small nature reserve with a rich plant and animal life, bordering Västra Torsöviken's popular beach. The nature reserves Sillnäs and Hjärthalla are located a few kilometers southwest and northwest of Västra Torsö.

Protected forest on fossil sand dunes

The tree-covered dunes within the Västra Torsö nature reserve originate from a former protective forest on fossil flying sand dunes. During the 19th century, much of the land on Listerlandet was cultivated, which led to increasing problems with sand drift in the sandy areas. The sand accumulated in dunes, which moved with the wind and buried both farmland and roads. In 1871, the state took over the Torsö airfield to stop the sand escaping from Torsö. The area was fenced off and they began to bind the sand by fertilizing it with seaweed and growing "sand oats", and then planting pine. It was mainly common pine that was planted, but also species such as mountain pine, black pine, weymouth pine and cembra pine.

Pine forest of the wooded dune habitat type still dominates the sandy soils. In places there are also elements of spruce, birch, beech and oak. Large parts of the flying sand field are becoming overgrown, which is a problem for many sand-related species that depend on open, sunlit sand, such as the small ant lion. The sand pine forest is also important for many wood-living insects.

Violet in old beech forest

North of the sand field, a diverse, multi-layered beech forest of a nutrient-poor type takes over. In the beech forest there are also stretches of pedestal-forming alpine swamp forest and a small, overgrown open marsh. Several signal species show that there has been beech forest and other deciduous forest in the area for a very long time. The very unusual mushroom violet can also be found in the forest.

Stone Age and present day

Humans have existed on Listerlandet for a long time and around 5000 years ago there was a Stone Age settlement within the nature reserve. The people who lived here at that time belonged to the pottery culture, and lived mainly from hunting and fishing in the sea.

Today, the flying sand field is an important hiking area for local residents, and the gnarled pine forest is known by some as the "troll forest". In summer, the adjacent beach at Västra Torsöviken is a popular destination.
