Handlinger

Beskrivelse

In the Skuremåla nature reserve you can experience an area of geological interest. The reserve includes ridges and deltas formed by the melting of the inland ice. Skuremålagölen in the northwestern part of the reserve is a dead ice pit.

There is also a beautiful mosaic-like cultural landscape with small light-colored fields, forests and grazed deciduous meadows with large birches, beeches and oaks.

Delta and dead ice pit

In this area, the land ice began to melt around 14,500 years ago and the highest coastline of the dammed Baltic Ice Lake was 65 meters above present sea level.

The extensive delta in the area was formed at the highest coastline when the ice sheet melted. During the later stages of the ice age, a large ice block was stranded here while the delta formed around it. When the ice block then melted, the large pit arose, the dead ice pit, which today is partly Skuremålagölen. The steep slope down to the lake shows where the border with the ice block was. The ridge is visible in the northern part and then disappears under the delta in the south.

Grazed birch meadows

Large parts of the nature reserve consist of light birch meadows on dry land of heath or meadow type. The most common plants are creeping thistle, red fescue, red fescue, knotweed, gray mallow, teveronica and rock sorrel.

Abundant honeysuckle grows in the area. Grazing animals keep the land open and there is a private farm in the middle of the reserve. All this makes the area a varied and appealing cultural landscape.

One of four

The four nature reserves in the area, Arvidstorp, Skuremåla, Mölleryd and Johannishus Ridges, can be seen in context as a landscape of great geological interest. They are examples of different river and delta formations that arose during the melting of the ice sheet. For a better understanding of the impact of the ice sheet on the landscape, you can study these four reserves during a tour.
