Beskrivelse
When you visit the Mörrumsån Ebbamåla Bruk nature reserve, you come to a rich natural and cultural landscape along the Mörrumsån river. There are easily accessible broadleaf forests in the river valley's steep slopes and banks along the river. Next door is Ebbamåla Mill, which is a culturally valuable and well-visited industrial monument.
Mörrumsån Nature Reserve Ebbamåla Mill stretches just under a kilometer along the western side of Mörrumsån in Blekinge's northern border region. In the east, the nature reserve borders directly on the Mörrumsån Upper Valley Nature Reserve. To the south, Käringahejan Nature Reserve and then the Mörrumsån Valley Nature Reserve connect, which together follow the course of Mörrumsån south for another 14 kilometers.
Species-rich river
The nature reserve covers parts of the western valley of Mörrumsån. Here the river follows a clear rift valley, where a mighty ice river flowed during the last ice age. The river falls only a few meters on its way through the nature reserve and is mainly calm flowing. Long-stemmed vegetation waves over gravel and stone bottoms. Willow leaves also grow in the water. The river also has species-rich, occasionally flooded alder and ash-dominated floodplain forests with elements of tall herb flora.
Mörrumsån is Blekinge's largest river and one of Sweden's most species-rich watercourses. The well-known Mörrumsålax thrives here, as well as a number of acidification-sensitive and clean water-demanding freshwater species. The thick-shelled mussel is an endangered large mussel that has one of its strongest populations in the country in Mörrumsån. Arctic grayling, common tern, great crested grebe and common snipe like to spend time along the river, as do otters. The richly flowering floodplain environments are also home to a large number of butterflies, dragonflies and other animals.
Broadleaf forests and bats
Along the river, forested, blocky cliffs and slopes rise up to a maximum of 25 meters above the river. The forests are oak-dominated, with a significant element of lime, hornbeam, pine and hazel. There are a number of endangered or otherwise vulnerable mosses, lichens and fungi here, including the unusual spider fungus. Wildlife is also rich. Moose, roe deer and wild boar roam the forests, as do lynx on occasion. Birds in the forest include the woodpecker and the wood crow. Several bat species, including the southern pipistrelle, lesser long-eared bat, brown long-eared bat and northern bat, hunt in the broadleaf landscape along the river.
Well-visited industrial heritage site
The nature reserve's land and water areas belong to the culturally very valuable and listed industrial monument Ebbamåla Mill. The mill was a typical hand-molding foundry, which was in operation between the years 1886 and 1967. In the early 1990s, the mill was revived as a popular tourist destination, with tours of the old foundry and the traditional craft methods. Ebbamåla Mill is still powered by the Mörrum River's hydropower. Upstream of the mill is a needle dam, with upright planks, "needles", that regulate the flow of water.
Mörrumsån has long been important for salmon fishing and as a transport and rafting route. A couple of old dirt roads lead through the nature reserve from the village of Ebbemåla down to Mörrumsån. On the other side of the river, the embankment of the Karlshamn-Vislanda narrow-gauge railway is now a popular walking and cycling route.
