Beskrivelse
The nature reserve in Bökemåla consists of a small hilly moraine landscape with natural forests of mostly pine and beech on the north side of Ällsjön. Here you can discover a rich bird life, especially with forest birds.
The reserve is a mosaic of forest and marshes. There are natural forests of pine and other conifers as well as a deciduous forest dominated by beech trees. There is plenty of dead wood in the hardwood-dominated parts. There are three areas with remains of crofts.
Peat remains
The cultural-historical values in the area include three smaller areas with house foundations after crofts or farms; Hästkullen, Lassatomten and Krissanatomten. There are stone walls, cairns and a lane as well as two cold-walled fireplaces and a tar pit. Only the Hästkullen croft, which burned down in the 1910s, is marked on the 1836 probate map. All the land was counted as outlying land, which means that it did not yield enough to be used as a field or meadow, but it was grazing land and the trees were used for timber, among other things. The small fields and meadows were too stony and poor to be considered arable.
Remains of equipment for making tar and processing flax are other signs that people have been active in the area. There are also the foundations of houses not shown on the maps, perhaps inhabited for a short period.
Rich bird life with many breeding species
The natural forests consist of pine forests, mixed forests and deciduous forests, as well as a mosaic of smaller wooded bogs and a small lake with a rocking float. The soil is a partly blocky moraine with several swamp forests in the hollows. Around the peat plots there is a large element of oak.
Bökemålas bird life is unusually rich, with many nesting species, most of them typical forest birds. Five species are on the EU's list of bird species requiring special protection measures: capercaillie, wolverine, skylark, pearl owl and Eurasian bittern.

Rutevejledning
Follow road 631 between Hällaryd and Bälganet. About halfway between Halahult and Bälganet, turn off towards the signs Hjärtsjömåla and Bökemåla (NOTE not towards S Bökemåla). After about 500 meters, take the second turnoff to the right. After another 1.2 kilometers, the road splits at a rock, turn right. Then keep left all the time. After about 1.8 kilometers you arrive at Ällsjön, which forms the southern border of the reserve. During the fall of 2024, work is underway to restore a bog within the nature reserve and the reserve parking lot will therefore be closed during this time.

You are welcome to visit Bökemåla, but please note that it is not allowed to
- damage the ground
- destroy or damage fixed natural objects or surface formations
- damage stone walls, cairns or house foundations
- unduly disturb wildlife
- damage growing or dead trees and bushes or vegetation in general
- bring an unleashed dog other than for hunting
- drive vehicles other than on the designated road to the parking lot
- ride a horse or bicycle other than on the road to the parking lot
- camping or setting up a caravan or camper
- make a fire other than in a designated place at Ällsjön
- use a radio or CD player in a disruptive manner or otherwise cause disturbing noise
- use the area for exercises that disturb nature or the public's outdoor life
- affix a board, poster, sign, inscription or similar device.
Without permission from the county administrative board, you may not
- collect beetles
- conduct scientific research or survey activities.
