Björstorps hage, Naturreservat

The floral splendor of Björstorp's garden nature reserve is well worth a visit in spring. There is an unusually rich grove flora here, with many species flowering before the trees have died. The garden is located on the border between forest and agricultural areas.

In early spring, for example, you will find wood anemone, swallow-wort, spring onion, cowslip, small-leaved anemone, goldenrod, water lily, wood sorrel and yellow anemone in Björstorp's garden. Later in the spring, lungwort and the orchid Saint Peter's keys bloom. The land was previously used for haymaking and as pasture.

The important function of hazel

There are plenty of alder, ash, birch and hazel trees in the nature reserve. Hazel used to be common on deciduous meadows. It provided nuts to eat and wood for tool handles. The leaves were thought to fertilize the soil.

The nutcracker has a good memory

The robin collects nuts in hazel stands during late summer and fall. The nuts are stored in the ground and the bird remembers exactly where it has hidden them, even if the snow has fallen. During the spring and summer, birds such as wrens, blackcaps and great and lesser spotted woodpeckers are also heard in Björstorp's meadow.
