Beskrivelse
The Åmma nature reserve is Blekinge's northernmost reserve along the Mörrum River. In Åmma you can feel the wings of history. The area is located on the old national border between Sweden and Denmark. Along Mörrumsån there are old inland fields and up on the slopes, vast outlying fields with indented hills take over.
In ancient times, transportation from the villages in Småland to the coast took place largely on and along Mörrumsån. An old map of Jämshög parish shows the name Veinsbo between Åmma bytomt and the national border. Veinsbo is thought to mean 'wagon gate'. Goods from the north, carried on narrow paths by horses, oxen and people, may have been reloaded into wagons here, for further transportation on better roads down to the then town of Elleholm, or to other places along the Blekinge coast.
Natural pastures and old crofts
In the nature reserve there are pastures and fields on ice river sediment next to Mörrumsån. There is also a gravel ridge. The land belongs to the village's old inland fields. To the west, a steep slope rises 25 meters above the valley floor and up on the slopes, extensive outfield forests with interspersed cultivation loops take over. Åmma's outfields have been grazed without interruption for a very long time and cows still roam large parts of the area in summer.
The outfield forests are characterized by mixed forests with mainly spruce, pine, oak, beech and aspen. The ground grows blueberry rice, creeping thistle and lingonberry. You may also encounter knotweed and green arrowroot. In the hollows there are sedge-covered marshes. Tucked away in the forests are heaths and formerly cultivated peatlands, as well as the remains of older crofts, boatmen's cottages and cottage settlements. A restored old meadow barn still stands in the area.
Plants that thrive in the long-cultivated land are haymaking, meadow night-flowering violet, crested newt, maidenhair fern, knotweed and sedge. Pollarded trees are also scattered in the fields, especially along Mörrumsån.
